Fleas and Family

A couple of weekends ago Chucks and I headed to the upstate of South Carolina for a reunion of the descendants of Claude and Alta Ward, his maternal grandparents.

I was raring to go because I knew there would be fleas on the way.

 
The fleas were not as numerous as I thought, but I did pick up some interesting items.

  An old black lunch box.

A canvas camping stool.

I have Revi-styled ideas for both of these.

Chucks actually dug this treasure out of a box under a trailer.

Scotch bottle wrapped in wire. 

The flip top with paper label and tax stamp.

I was pouting for just missing two vintage suitcases.

The dealer tossed me this bundle and said I looked like I might like it.

LIKE IT !?!

I LOVE IT !!!!

Quilt patches of small squares - no particular pattern. (Well, it is nine-patch)

Such great fabric patterns - some flour sack material.

A big thick NORGE Encyclopedic Cookbook.

Norge made appliances.

The recipes are from the Culinary Arts Institute.




Some of you collect those little booklets they published.

This is a bound copy of those booklets.

There are added pages of blueprints.

Here for floral arrangements for your table.

Here for a root cellar to store your jams and jellies.

And of course the recipes for jams and jellies.


I don't wish to appear lazy, but if I need jam I think it would be easier to run to the store and buy a jar.

Having said that, I am picky about my jams.

I grew up quite spoiled by grandparents who made whatever jams and jellies we desired.

But we did not have a root cellar.

After just one wrong turn and several flea stops, we made it to the reunion.

Of the seven children, two are still living - Helen and Clyde.

We had several generations of descendants present at the reunion.

Hope we get to do it again.

Make It Monday #4

 Welcome to Make It Monday #4!

This week it was my turn to choose the features from last week's party.  Tough job - I wish I could have chosen all of you.

I was able to narrow the features down to four.

White Crates

Good Sunday morning to all y'all.

I was able between drizzles to get one project painted.

White crates.

To use as displays in the booths.

A dealer at Riverfront sells used vegetable crates.

Some are the full crates like the one on top here.

Others he adds a shelf in the middle like the bottom one.

I bought a mixture of both styles.

Now, folks, they are used which means vegetables have been shipped in them.

I try not to pick out an onion one for obvious reasons.

I clean and sand the vegetable and mold residue off each crate.

Compare the two in the photo.



Before and after.

A quick coat of plain old white paint.

I didn't bother with a second coat even though they soaked up the paint.

I wanted some of the wood to show through.

After being in the truck for two weeks, the crates are finally completed.

They are now in my booths holding merchandise.




Since I forgot to take a photo - twice! - I will show them in the driveway from a different point of view.

Sorta artsy!

A Review of Artistic Endeavors 101

On Tuesday of this week I arrive home to find this intriguing package in the mail.

It was from Brooke of Artistic Endeavors 101.

We had met on Swap & Tell and made a swap.

I sent her a jar filled with lace, buttons, and a Frozen Charlotte.

She sent me this!

The packaging alone made me gasp.

All the wrapping are distressed with layers of mixed media adornments.

And tags!

The swap was for the rose bangles she creates from torn cotton sheets.

They arrived in my colors in a cotton bag.

The trouble with most bangles are my freakishly tiny wrists.

I have lost several bangles.

Brooke sent me the small bangles and they fit perfectly.

No, I will not wear six at a time, but three look quite nice.

I just had to show them off.

A sweet thank you tag.

Her Etsy shop tag is a work of art.

Embossed, Brooke's business card sewn on, and added buttons with other tiny details.

WOW!

Great impression.

Here is the back so you can see the embossing and distressing.

Brooke included a surprise in with the bangles.

First you have to admire the way this is presented.

I have carefully saved the wrapping.

Inside were the polymer clay disks Brooke makes.

I had commented how much I liked these.

Aren't they lovely?

 

I have several ideas in mind for using these.

I am now to rate Brooke's Etsy shop.

I would have to say the presentation sent her ratings soaring to whatever is beyond excellent.

Her attention to small details is very creative.

The shipping was fast and the items were well-packaged.

Will I be tempted to buy from Brooke?

You better believe it!
