Friday Finds: The Junk Man's Loss

A couple of Saturday's ago I lucked up on a junk man's closing sale.

I had never stopped at the building before.



I was surprised at all the neat stuff he had.

What in the world is this? 

An art deco store display rack for jackets or shirts.

Rich patina and heavy duty.

His loss, my gain.

Gave me a price for one insulator.

I asked for a price for ALL of the insulators.

His loss, my gain.

Two old first aid kits still full of supplies.

One from Nassau County Police Department.

The other "Property of the State of South Carolina".

Not anymore.

I will admit haggling went on and on over the price for these two.

Finally we reached an agreement.

His loss, my gain.

Love the brown splatter enamelware sieve and will keep it.

Paid his price for it and he threw in the candy tin.

His loss ...

I dug these out of various assorted boxes under his tables and put them together on the counter.




He was quite taken with the way they looked all together.

However he had agreed on a price for the three before I placed them there.

... my gain.

I have never found one of these before.

It is a tin bread box.

Just like the picnic tin I used to own but sold!

Drat.

My loss and my gain.

I am keeping this for a bit.

Milk glass mugs for a drink after skiing.

Be prepared to gag.

It is a Schuss Boomer.

UGH!

But the graphics are so cute.

A very productive day for me.

Going, Going, Gone!

Another Saturday night at the auction.

Antique Uniques Auction  (FB page HERE) is fast, fun and friendly.


 
In order to get my hands on the blue felt Scottie with the 1939 calendar from Dominica, the vintage milk caps, and the sweater clip ...

I had to buy these.

Don't you love the tiny metal sculpture of the man on the toilet?

Large red doll trunk.

Brown porcelain door knob/lock set.

Dog nutcracker. 

(Our dogs crack their own nuts - they are especially fond of the pecans and hickory nuts in the backyard - yes, I know they are NOT supposed to eat nuts.) 

A silverplate ice bucket - I named it Beth for a friend who likes ice buckets.

Guess what?  She came in Tuesday and bought it!

In order to get my hands on the crate, I had to buy all the bottles.

Not a bad deal - they are mostly from bottling plants decades gone.

Casters!!!

Lots of casters!!! 

Remember last auction I bought porcelain and iron casters? (READ HERE)

Well, I bought more.

More casters!!!

The ones pointing left are wood and metal.

The ones pointing right are all metal.

Ridiculous you say?

NO, just MORE casters!!!

Odd assortment of different types.




I had to buy the whole tin to get my hands on the giant one.

(I would have bought them all anyway.)

The auctioneer looked at me and said, "She wants them if nobody else does."

Casters - these from a mechanic's creeper.

Never thought about collecting these.

Look at the rusty beauties.

A Pepsi crate - made in February, 1972.

Yes, most crates are dated.

I do love the jars!

Another Pepsi crate.

This one is in rough shape and needs a thorough cleaning. I hope to find the date legible.

I had to buy the vintage enamelware urinal to get my hands on the Olympic Thermos picnic jug.



The jug is so clean, I could fill it with ice water and use it right away. 

The urinal - not so much.

A Navy duffel bag.

A child's spade.

A large shovel head - the handle is toast.

My two favorite finds.

A large galvanized funnel with a red stripe.

A large grain bin drawer.

Quickies

Some quickies for you this morning.

I went shopping in Horror Monster Outdoor Living Section and gathered an armload of things to clean.

Like these two planter pots.

This is the after.


Here is the before.

One was hammered brass - all stained and dirty.

One was hammered aluminum - once painted black at least one hundred years ago.

I thought why not make them MORE distressed!?!

So I spritzed them with white paint. 

Just on the outside.

Then sanded the heck out of them.

This is the brass one.

This is the aluminum one.

They each received a waxing.

I do love their aged appearance.

A folding metal table I used to hold plants was actually once a grill. 

A chamber pot.

A black bird feeder.

A green mailbox.

All were sanded.

I found that tiny copper watering can too.

All were washed.

The mailbox revealed multiple layers of blue and green.

All were waxed and buffed.

I threw in the South Boundary sign from the 60's.

And the can and dasher from a ice cream churn.

This small cabinet has been working in my craft room.

I knew someone had painted it black.

As I was sanding the rust off the back, I noticed some outlines of letters.

I gently sanded off the paint to find:

WORKMASTER

PAINT KIT

OIL & GREASE

SEARS AND ROEBUCK AND CO.

Holes for hanging.

A little shelf.

I plan to list this cutie on Etsy.

Morning Sky

 

Morning Sky - a blue from Krylon's Chalky Spray paint arsenal.

A delightful primitive cabinet.

A great combination.

If you remember I bought this while on the Peach Tree 23 yard sale event READ HERE .

Here it is topless.

And here it is with its enamelware top.

It is slightly askew for a reason.

It was where the previous owner sat to drink his coffee each morning on the porch.


Have you ever noticed the stories behind pieces of furniture are often more interesting than the furniture alone?

Flipped over to clean and paint - found out the shelves were held in by layers of dirt.

No problem - never met dirt I could not banish.

Topless and shelfless - best way to paint.

This after the first light coat. 

I did two.

Once again I did not distress it.

I may have to change the name of my blog if I continue this trend!

I will say this about this paint, and I am NOT paid to say a thing.

It dries in hot, humid conditions.

YAY!!!

I did not secure the shelves - just crammed them back in.

The top only needed cleaning.

Added a cute tag for the new booth.

Styled it with a green metal basket filled with aluminum colanders.

Yep, another collection bites the dust and moves on be sold.

I even threw in the last of my sprinkler collection.

I did keep one giant star colander.
