Friday Finds

vintage dolls, Ernest Lee, vintage finds
I have greatly curtailed my buying in order to turn around the great masses of treasures piling up in the house.

We are in the midst of an intense heat wave and all painting must be done early - like when the sun rises.

I could not pass up these tattered and torn Raggedy Ann's and Andy's.

They look quite patriotic - I'll add a flag or two.

Great price on a great chair.

She was a beauty in her day I am sure.

She needs a lot of love.

Her upholstery is shot and her springs are dragging the floor.

Surgery may be needed.

Check back later for the patient's progress.

It was just too hot to drag this heavy dresser out to take a pic and then shove her back in the truck.

I have no idea why "Out, Out" is written on her bottom.

Not sure if sanding to distress her or painting her is the way to go.

Check back later.

A design store (Material Things) with wonderful fabric is moving and having a fantastic sale.

I dare anyone to say they can resist fabric.

You will see this distressed blue and beige linen as chair seats.

Check back later.

I bought stacks of samples.

They can be used in framing, pillows, and tied in bundles to place in a basket.

As I was paying for my fabric, I happened to look down to see two original paintings by South Carolina outsider art legend Ernest Lee.

This is a patriotic theme painting of ...

Red, white, and blue CRABS!!!

Ernest has a wicked sense of humor.

Ernest Lee is known for his funky chickens.

I started many, many years ago collecting his work.

Ernest is quite the character if ever you get to talk with him.

He is slowing down and his son is now selling his work.

His chickens always have an attitude.

Check out this Southern Living article on Ernest Lee HERE.

Last, but not least, when someone asks you to help drag a huge trellis to the street, you agree and drag it straight to your truck!

I will be up at 5:30am the next few days trying to get some painting done and spending the afternoon in the pool.

No hunting for treasures this weekend.

However, I said that last week.

Be sure to check back later.

See y'all!

  1. Miss Donna;
Thank-You so much for making me Smile!
I have Always Loved Crusty Raggedy Ann's and Andy's. I have a couple of them that I have Loved for so long lurking around here.
I usually buy another one if it tugs at my Heart.
The Material that you found looks so Beautiful. I wish that I had some of it.
Ernest Lee's work looks quite Fascinating.....I must read all about him. Some of his work, must be quite Collectable and worth some $$$.
I for one, cannot wait to see how you fix the Antique Chair and Dresser.
What a nice looking Trellis. I would have done the exact same thing, also!
It sure looks nice in your yard.

  2. You always have the best treasures! Can't wait to see what you do with that great old chair. Enjoy your time in the pool. Ours is already too hot to be refreshing!

  3. I love your fun collecting attitude!! Can't wait to see the chair and the chest!

  4. This is going to be my third weekend in a row that I haven't hunted for treasures! I'm actually rather enjoying my leisurely weekends. (Ha - except the last 2 I was peddling junk both Saturdays!)

  5. If chairs could talk, I'm sure that beauty would have quite the story. "Out out" is a little unnerving, no? And who doesn't need a huge trellis???

  6. Great stuff Donna. You will be finding many uses for that great fabric and turn that trellis up-side-down and you have a Christmas tree for display. Beautiful old chair and I just know you will bring her back to life. Take care and take a little rest.

  7. Could the "out, out" be in tribute to Macbeth? :-) Love the crabs and chicken art! Are the fabric samples going on Etsy?? :-) Can't wait to see the new patient after surgery...she's beautiful!

  8. You know... your blog never seems to disappoint. I love all your finds. I can't wait to see the "patient's" progress, what a beautiful chair, I'm glad you're saving it!

I know what you mean about slowing down on buying to take care of the mass of treasures you accumulate! I've been doing that lately too!

  9. love me some "funky chicken"! and yes, my answer to making a vignette patriotic is to "put a flag in it! Happy weekend!

  10. Looking forward to seeing what you do with the is awesome! My favorite is the fabrics for sure...:) The paintings are very interesting! I'll have to read the article when I have a few minutes. For now, I am trying to read everyone's post from today as I was in the craft room ALL day long and that was after I stayed up until 3 AM working last night! Have a great weekend...:)

  11. What fun finds! It will be fun to see the chair.

  12. I too am really, really trying not to go out to sales till I get some of my stash listed. I am a listing queen lately, putting at least four items a day in my shop and still not ahead of it. IT IS KILLING ME NOT TO GO OUT AND BUY MORE! Love your Raggedy's. I have a collection of those myself. Those paintings are funky!!

  13. Great fabric score, and so many fun finds. I love love love that old chair and can't wait to see what you do with it.

  14. I think that used to be Lady Macbeth's dresser. I believe that Shakespeare edited out the scenes where she went around writing on the undersides of the furniture. I love me a good raggedy Raggedy myslef. I think it's a sign of something that was well loved by a child. It has gotten ungodly hot here too, I can't stand it.

  15. Love all your treasures. That fabric is gorgeous!!! Thanks showing everything off at Vintage Inspiration Party.

  16. Love all your treasures. That fabric is gorgeous!!! Thanks showing everything off at Vintage Inspiration Party.

  17. Oh yes, drag that trellis right on home! That is really some funky art. He has to have a sense of humor! Hot here as well. Started painting a bench and can't get myself to finish it. Thanks for sharing with SYC.
