Picky About Pickins'

This time of year I get picky about what I pick.

It is not I can't find the stuff, but I'm an outdoor girl at heart.

I would rather be working in the yard, swimming laps, or taking a nap in the pool.


Not stuck inside the house.

So last week I made a conscious effort to buy only quick turn-around things.

Definite "keeps" or "sells".

Chalkware souvenir shepherd from Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Big and beautiful.

About 18" high.

Plastic framed roses print.

The frame needs to be distressed white.

I may or may not do it.

The primitive brown crock I am torn on.

I have a bowl that matches this finish.

It may be a keeper.

Finally found a stack of windows.

Just double paned - I was looking for three over threes.

I must not be too picky about my pickins' though.




Old wooden windows are getting harder to find.

I loved the geometric shape of these stacked wire baskets.

They need for me to make liners for them.

I may or may not do it.

The set of pink floral sheets have an odor unlike any I have smelled.

Boiling water bath for them.

Two chair back covers in red and white.

Two student music booklets.

I bought another of the hats the volunteer at the SPCA Thrift Shop decorates with millinery flowers and vintage trims.



This one is sitting inside the front door.

She matches  the Bonnie Bonnet lampshade here.

Three more baskets to makeover in my Prairie - Plain and Primitive style.

No "may" about this task.

I have been working diligently in transforming the baskets.

Some will be in my Etsy shop.

Some will be at Riverfront Antique Mall.

And some will be in my house!

Chucks says I need to take a picture of Mount Basket in the living room.

I may or may not do it.

I would have to clean first.

And I'd rather be outdoors.

New Lisitngs - New Obsession

I have been busy organizing and cleaning items for my Etsy shop.  

I am gradually destashing Horror Monster of his supplies such as laces, buttons, and baskets.

Here are some new finds and some old finds and a couple of the collections I am putting together.

After enjoying the silhouette for a couple of weeks, I have decided another collection is not needed.

This one is adorably distressed in all the right places.

Now for the Prairie - Plain and Primitive items I have been gathering and distressing and filling with goodies.

This small lidded basket painted white with three crochet pieces.

I made a distressed calico rosette with a silver button for the top.

Remember over a year ago I bought all those feather pillows from an old (1960's) summer camp?

I am listing the last of them.

I emptied the feathers, soaked the pillow ticks very well and washed them.

I am selling them one at a time.

I only have nine left.

Tied with a stained torn pink ribbon.

A small basket painted with Sweet Pea Pink decorated with a pink ribbon and two crochet pieces.







Those of you who have emailed me about the jars of lace, buttons, and Frozen Charlottes will need to wait another week.

I am sorry but I am having trouble with deciding which Charlottes and lace and buttons to keep.

Sometimes it is hard to downsize, but be prepared because I am selling off several collections.

Because this morning I started a whole new obsession - I took a beginning knitting class.

I have proudly knitted seven rows of a washcloth.

I failed casting on - the instructor had to do it.

So Horror Monster has to shift his load as yet another craft project enters this house.

Chucks is shaking in his boots.

Whee - The Peach Tree 23

Whee!  Every year on the first Saturday of June, there is the Peach Tree 23 Yard Sale event.  

It is forty-four miles down State Highway 23 from Batesburg-Leesville, SC to Modoc, SC.

I have never made it all the way from end to end - just too much and too hot!

I had a short list and vowed to keep to it.

I wanted farm fresh - straight from the barn - rusty, crusty delights.

And I found them.

I purchased the old scissors and rusty hook first thing.

They are for decorating - not using!  (Chucks!)

I would love to say I never pass up these vintage metal shelf units, but I did leave one behind because of the price.

This one was a deal.









A galvanized sorting tray - quite long.

Missing dividers, but ...

It has the numbers handwritten down the sides.

Old wall-mounted cupboard in pink, green, and white.

The door will have to be sanded so it can close.

Yes, that is a glass knob on it.

You have sharp eyes to spy it under all that paint.

I had metal milk crates on my list and found two.

You can't make up patina like this.

Yes, I do see all the dirt and spider webs.

A lovely black straw bonnet with beautiful millinery flowers bedecking it.

No, I did not buy the head.

I bought the head before I thrifted before I went yard saling.

It's a long story.

All three items on my list -

A rusty wheel.

A rusty can.

A typing table.

Check, check, check!

On the list -

A wooden ironing board.

Enamelware basins.

Check, check.









In Ward, SC, we spied doors and windows.  

(Or at least I did.  Chucks was trying to drive fast through the traffic so I would not see the old doors.  How silly of him - he knows I have door-dar!)





I only bought one - you can see why.

Blue patina!

YAY!

How funny is that guy showing his wife who was driving down the highway things she might want.

My favorite find of the day was this stack of tin ceiling tiles.

Both rusty and crusty.

Only need a little dirt removal.

Patina is perfect.



How far did we travel?

About twenty miles.

I had a mostly filled truck and had checked off many items on my list.

Plus it was 10:30 and the fog was burning off.

Sweltering heat ahead.

We went home to relax in the AC.

We are wimps.

Prairie - Plain and Primitive

I do not know exactly how time has escaped me, but it has.  I have been caught up with Prairie Style - the book, blogs and magazines.

I cannot get enough of the decorating ideas.

So I jumped in over my head with a pile of baskets to alter into prairie style - plain and primitive.

Here are the first two finished.

More baskets are on the way.

I took two creel-inspired baskets from the 1980's in horrible shape.

The baskets had come unwoven and parts missing.

No problem.

I whitewashed them first.

(Well, I first cleaned them - they were dusty!) 

I took vintage mattress ticking fabric aged with taupe dye and coffee to alter the creels.

I repaired the broken weave in places.

Tied pieces together.

Added a strap of the ticking for a hanger.

Used some vintage buttons.

Made rosettes of distressed torn calico in a blue floral.

Also made a tassel for the front.

I am happy with the result and have become engrossed with other baskets and how to alter them into prairie style - plain and primitive.


I have made stacks of torn cotton ribbons and rosettes and tassels.


I promise I will be around to check on all of you soon.  I have a pile of emails and comments to answer and I am starting right this very minute.
