Friday Finds - Vintage Market Days

On the same weekend as the Magnolia Ridge Gathering back in May, there was a Vintage Market Days event in North Augusta about a mile from Riverfront Antique Mall.

It was a boon for the sales at the booth.

I did not get to attend the first day, but after Ridge Spring on Saturday morning, I drove back to Aiken, unloaded, and headed to North Augusta.

I was searching for metal stuff for the kitchen.

This is not old but it is perfect for Chucks to have hanging over his coffee station.

Just a gentle reminder, you know.

A large sheet of pressed tin.

Have not used it yet, but it may not remain whole.

Pressed tin cornice pieces.

I have a project involving sheep for these.

I met Sarah Jane Fisher of Southern Boy Primitives and fell in love with the items she and Andy sell as they travel.

These are pieces from a Makom chicken brooder.

They have a delicious rusty look.

I have them outside getting a little more rusty before I seal them.

I will probably use them in a row on the outside wall where there is currently a big hole in the brick where the old vent fan was removed.

My hope is it will cover the difference in the new brick and the old brick.

Chucks has gone around the neighborhood looking for old brick matching what is on our house.

He has amassed quite a stack.

When looking to see if I could find a picture of a Makom brooder I found an ad for an auction in the Hutchinson Herald in November, 1944. There was a Makom brooder listed under machinery. Auction advertisement - HERE.

I was able to attend the first Vintage Market Days in two places in South Carolina. The one in Ladson was cooler, but the one in North Augusta was closer.  Several of the same dealers, but I will probably attend both of the fall shows.

I was impressed with each event.

Beach Signs

Yes, even more signs.

Signs for beach memories or a beach house.








 

Using up a random pile of wood.

Using up small jars of OOPS paint.

(I will have to remember to have this one replenished!)

A delightful silvery sage green.

Not your ordinary beach scene color.

Painted an abstract of sky, surf, and sand.

Added umbrellas leaning with the wind.

Each board was a different size.

Each beach scene is unique.

Used beachy stencils from Homestead.

Quickies - BINGO!

More signs!

The cupboard door from Friday Finds READ HERE inspired a group of BINGO signs.

The door needed a good scrubbing and it was good to go.

The BINGO stencil was purchased from Old Sign Stencils designed by Donna of Funky Junk Interiors.

Cream, black and red craft paint was used to stencil.

This is officially the worst photo ever!

This sign can be found in Booth W-10.

It prompted me to drag out some spare boards to create two more.

The most time involved is waiting for paint to dry.

These two are going to Magnolia Ridge Antiques and Art Gathering on May 21.

South Main Superette

I am busy, busy, busy finishing projects for the farm sale and keeping the booths stocked.

 
Lately I have been in a painting signs kind of mood.

I started with two boards from Horror Monster, my beloved stash.

Dug out the Bermuda Sand paint.

(Really if anyone walked into my house the first thing she would say is "How much?" There is that much stuff in the living room!)

These two boards have had many reincarnations.

Yes, the colors are rather fab, but I going white.

You can see I relented and let some of the other layers of paint show through.

Just brushed on a thin coat.

There's Willie hanging his head - he despises having his photo taken, but insists on being in the background.

Growing up I used to love going to the superette - loved the name of the tiny grocery store.

So I made up South Main Superette for my sign.



I did not have the right size stencils for the lettering.

Printed out the letters.

Taped them to the boards.

Used old fashion carbon paper.

I pick up every box I can find at estate sales.

The top board shows the letters in black and red.

The bottom shows after highlighting and shadowing the letters.

Then off they went (after a couple of coats of varnish) to Booth W-10.

Yesterday I spent several hours with a new group of signs.

Will show you on Sunday.

Painted some items for the Gathering, tagged some items for the Gathering, and waxed some items for the Gathering.

It seems to be all about the Gathering - I have two weeks left to prepare.

YIKES!!!

Friday Finds - Stencils!

This week's 
Friday Finds 
are something different.

I did not buy anything this week though I did pick up a pile of windows, but you have seen stacks of those here.



So my favorite find of the week are the stencils I ordered from Funky Junk (Visit Funky Junk Interiors Old Sign Stencils HERE). 

Featured today is the Farmer's Market sign stencil.

The stencil also includes the arrow.

I purchased another stencil I will use on a project for next week.

The stencils are designed to be used in a multitude of ways.

I bought nine pieces of heavy-duty flashing pieces at Vintage South on my recent Low Country Crawl. (Visit the Vintage South website HERE.)

I decided they would make perfect signs.



Yes, I do realize there are only eight pieces in the photo.  The ninth would not fit.
 

This homemade greige paint has a base of Farragoz gesso.

I seal it in these containers and keep it in the refrigerator.

If you happen to visit, do NOT eat anything from the produce drawers.

No matter how appetizing it may look.

One slap-dash coat and they are done.

Rust shines right through.

Well, rust really does not do the "shine" thing.

Rust glowers in the background.

You know how to stencil so I won't go through the steps.

Personal opinion - I don't like the spaces on stenciled letters so I fill them in with a liner brush.

I used barn red for the Farmers'.

Here the signs sit waiting for two coats of a satin craft varnish.

Don't want any of the rust to fall off!

I will let the customers decide to hang or to prop.

Someone passing by wanted to know if I was selling all my sedum.

Really!?!

Well, maybe.
