Quickies

crate, makeover, quickie project, stencil, Americana Decor Chalky Finish paint
A project completed while competing with the rhythm gymnasts at the Olympics.

Only one mistake in my routine - I dropped a loaded brush of Mod Podge.

No deductions - it cleaned right up.

A gold medal project finished in less than 30 minutes counting drying time.

Started with this wooden crate.

19" X 8" X 7"

Top and part of the side missing in action.

On the back the part of the label said to open on this side - looks like whoever opened the crate did NOT follow directions well.

I could make out the crate was for a mixer of some sort.

Not much left of the label which was badly peeling.

Painted the front with Americana Decor Chalky Finish paint in Escape.

Used the Farmer's Market stencil from Old Sign Stencils by Funky Junk Interiors .

I highlighted Farmer's in orange.

Several attempts to save the label all failed.

Used Mod Podge over the whole crate to save what paper was left.

Great crate for fall foliage, pine cones, or pumpkins.

It will be waiting for you in Booth W-10.

If I can part with it.

See y'all!

Saltwash Versus Sea Salt

Furniture painting, Saltwash, painting with sea salt, textured finishes
After using plain sea salt on my zinc pots (READ POST HERE), I decided to take the challenge to tables.

It would be the Saltwash Versus Sea Salt competition.

Which product would win the gold?

By the way, I was NOT compensated for using the products named in any way.

Saltwash purchased HERE.   Two Lovely Flowers on Etsy.

Cerulean Seas Sea Salt Fine Crystals purchased at Fresh Market for $1.99 plus tax.

My two victims - two similar candlestick tables.

Both needed a bit of tightening and cleaning before the challenge began.

To be able to start on a level playing field, I painted each with Waverly Chalk paint in Truffle.

One coat for each.

Dried great in less than 20 minutes.

In separate plastic cups, I mixed Saltwash with Americana Decor Chalky Finish paint in Escape and the same with plain sea salt.

I only mixed a little because a little goes a long way.

I used the directions from watching Saltwash videos.

At this point I was not a happy camper.

It was a hot and humid day.

Not good for painting outside.

This is the table with Saltwash.

I named her Prissy.

This is the table with plain sea salt.

I named her Scruffy.

I had a very difficult time getting this dry enough for the next step.

The Saltwash must have a drying agent in it - it dried a little better than the sea salt.

I used Americana Decor Chalky Finish paint in Lace for the top coat.

Here's a full view of Prissy.

Here's her top.

Texture - check

Sea washed color - check

However neither table would dry.

It did not help I left them for a quick Olympics watch and it sprinkled rain on them.

I threw both of them in the dining room for a few days.

The paint finally cured - it no longer peeled right off.

Here's Scruffy after sanding and a coat of satin varnish.

It was quite easy to get the layers of paint to show.

Her base is definitely textured and ancient-looking.

Prissy (Miss Saltwash) was harder to sand.

I was not using the electric sander - just a sanding sponge.

Here's her top - it was difficult to get down to the brown layer of paint.

Her base is textured and has an old look.

So which table wins the gold and which the silver?

I have to award Prissy (Miss Saltwash) the gold - she dried and sanded to a smooth distressed finish.

Scruffy (Miss Sea Salt) wins the silver - if you love a lot of texture and depth this is the choice for you.

I will use the rest of the canister of Saltwash on other furniture projects, but for smalls like my zinc pots, I will stick to plain old sea salt.

I still think the finishes learned in the Farragoz course are superior to these.

And, NO, I am not compensated to say that.

See y'all!

Quickies

quick makeovers, mannequins, Americana Decor paint
Remember my miniature mannequin collection I was downsizing?

Well, I decided a few of them needed transforming before selling.

The tall ones were actually pin cushions though I never had the heart to stick pins in them.

Like shabby chic voodoo.

Watch out, Rachel!

The small ones with sea grass twine had served their purpose of holding bracelets.

Used leftover Vintage (Americana Decor Chalky Finish Paint).

The small ones had plenty of texture.

But after coating all with satin varnish, the tall ones were nondescript.

Added multiple stamps in black - both front and back.

Added Distress Ink in Pewter for a silver patina.

Slightly French.

Slightly glamorous.

All available in Booth C-23, Riverfront Antique Mall, North Augusta, South Carolina.

See y'all!

Vintage On Primitives

Americana Decor Chalky Finsh paint, Vintage color, cupboard, primitive table
I found two  primitives deserving of using Americana Decor Chalky Paint in Vintage.

Vintage is a soft gray/green/blue color often found on very old primitives.

A handmade kitchen cupboard.

Made from old pieces of pine and 70's era paneling.

I loved the shape of it.

If I was keeping it, I would probably just sand a bit then wax, wax, wax.

I did not notice the towel rack fashioned from an old curtain rod on the bottom.

The Vintage covered every bit of dirt and grease with NO bleed through.

Real life crackle - not from a jar.

Perfect for a tea kettle.

I am taking it to the farm sale Saturday.

$25

Next I worked on this primitive table which was rather cute before its makeover.

Thanks, Liz!

(The Rusty Typewriter on Etsy)

Up on the paint frame for a couple of coats of Vintage.

The top was covered with a sheet of Masonite in very good condition for its age.

So it became a chalkboard!

I love it so much I took about fifty photos of it.

But I will only bore you with a few.

Mr. Chalkboard table will be traveling to the farm sale also.

$40

One corner of the living room piled with treasures for Magnolia Ridge.

Of course, Lizzie, my mannequin, will NOT be going!

See y'all!
