Vintage Postcards

vintage psotcards from the early 1900's
Time of the year when I buy large lots of vintage postcards to use in projects and to sell.

I prefer the ones which have been used - I find the messages interesting.

The florals sell well.

Postcards featuring chicks are usually kept for my private collection.

A part of the group of four hundred.

A wide variety of Christmas, New Year's, Easter, birthday, and other holidays.

The postcards are from 1900 to 1935.

Often the Thanksgiving cards feature an Americana theme.

New Year's cards sometimes have the date as part of the graphic.

One lone souvenir card from Niagara Falls.

Some collectors choose cards by the message or handwriting style.

If the postcards do not arrive in plastic sleeves, I keep some on hand to protect the cards.

I sell them for $1.75 to $3.00.

A small price to pay for a piece of history from a hundred years ago.

See y'all!

Friday Finds

junkin, thrift store finds, vintage finds, baskets prints
Spider bites or no spider bites, if I could manage to sit for any length of time, I did go junkin.

So sit back and prepare yourself for the multitude of Find posts yet to be written.

Like this green suitcase.

Doesn't it look like it's sticking its tongue out?

Carom boards are always popular.

I can sell as many as I can find.

Book sale at a thrift netted a stack of children's books from the 50's, 60's, and 70's.

One red hymnal.

I had trouble deciding on only three to keep, but I am being brutal about downsizing around here.

The tall willow basket with the handle is a style I am using in the kitchen so it's a keeper.

A brass cricket box, natural basket, rolls of vintage velveteen ribbon, and ...

German postcards someone had framed.

I envisioned pots of herbs in these carriers sitting on the kitchen counter.

Could not find a single pot to fit.

Off to the booth.

Got a bundle deal if I agreed to take all of the rackets.

Okay!

Love to find baskets already painted in the colors I need.

Nice big ones.

Filled with ...

Gospel song books.

1940's framed If.

It went fast.

Two darling baby prints.

First a sleeping baby.

Titled "At Peace With The World".

The second is a cheeky baby.

Titled "That's That".

A set of four ballerinas.

A group of red books!

I love red books!

A few from the set of The World's Best Short Stories.

I enjoyed these for several weeks and then whisked them away to the booth.

Can you believe it?

Three posts in a row.

ALERT: Just to warn you I downloaded 600 photos from my camera and my phone.

And I do plan to show you most of them.

See y'all!

Photo Opportunity

vintage photos, vintage postcards, papal audience - 1930
No Quickies post this Sunday.  The weather was nice enough to complete large projects and do some cleaning.

Remember back in January I shopped from home for photographs and postcards?

Here are more of the collection.

There were many babies in this group - good sellers.

Another group in great shape.

This is a family - Lillian, Helen and William.

One photo each year.

I bought another group of photos from the same dealer and got more of the same family.

I now wish I knew Lillian, Helen and William's last name so I could look them up.

The dealer stuck in an extra with the group - a tin type.

Yes, the photo is really on tin.

I will probably sell it.

If it was a child or baby, I would keep it.

At an estate sale I chanced upon this tattered and torn album.

Filled with numerous postcards - black and white - photos of Rome.

There was only one snapshot of three of the four who were traveling together.

How did I know there were four?

Why were they in Rome?

What exciting event did they attend?

This document was on the last page.  The corner torn was the entrance ticket.

A loose translation:

 The Papal Antechamber
His Holiness receives in audience
The day ____ at 12.30
Camillo Caccia Dominioni
Vatican Master of Chamber of His Holiness

It is dated December 31, 1930.

There are instructions for the proper dress for the audience.

The ticket is for four.

I am such a history geek that I got a huge thrill over finding this even though there are probably thousands of them floating around.

And I can't let you go without confessing the sin of gluttony.

I bought another 200 postcards!

Update on Miss Peepers:  She checked out fine at the vet.  Needs to gain a few pounds and stay inside for a few more days until her strength is back.

See y'all!

Time to Drop It Or Swap It!

vintage photos, vintage postcards, swap meet
I am offering this package for a swap.

Three old photographs.

All came from the same estate sale.

I like to fantasize about the story behind these pictures.

A man in a hat rocking on the porch.

Mounted on black.

Measures 4 X 6 inches - photo itself is 3 X 5 inches approximately.

A photo of a steel bridge.

Mounted on black.

About the same size as the man.

A lovely lady on a swing.  There is a man sitting right behind her.

Mounted on tan.

Measures 5 X 6 inches - photo itself is 4 3 inches.

All are in worn, used condition.

I like to think these two were sweethearts and met on the steel bridge.  Maybe that's her father on the porch.

Or you may want these to be ancestors.

I am also throwing in five assorted vintage postcards.

The cards will be similar to these.

Some are written on and some are not.

If you have a preference of occasion like Christmas or Easter, I may be able to honor your request.

I have postcards in groups of ten in my Etsy shop and have listed other new items too.

So for the Drop It Or Swap It, I have three old photographs and five vintage postcards.

Any offers?

See y'all!

UPDATE:  THE PHOTOS AND THE POSTCARDS HAVE BEEN SWAPPED!

Ed's Editions

Bookshop, vintage books, book collections, vintage postcards
Sometimes you pass by a place for years idly wondering if it is worth stopping to browse.

If you go somewhere with my niece Olivia and you see the word "book" on a building, you are going to stop.

Ed's Editions.

A wonderful haven for book lovers in West Columbia, South Carolina.

Just before you drive over the Gervais Street bridge into downtown Columbia.

It is worth stopping.

It is located in an old storefront.

Have Ed tell you some stories of the place.

Make sure you allot plenty of time.

You are going to be here awhile.

Olivia scanning the shelves.

The first place I go is the children's books section.

I collect old reading books.

Ed has quite a collection.

A shelf of old and very old story books.

Antique and vintage objects placed in the nooks and crannies of the store add to the charm.

Stacks and stacks of books carefully arranged by genre and author.

Can't you imagine the journeys that await you in these books?

They have taken other people there.

Cozy chairs welcome you to sit and read awhile.

Ed's Editions is easy to miss.

You might catch a glimpse as you drive pass.

Next time stop and enjoy a bookshop unlike the big chain stores.

You will find treasure here.

These are some of the treasures we found.

Two reading books.

One from a series I collect.

I have hundreds of postcards in my collection, but none this size.

Souvenir packet from Venice..

Look at their size.

They are half the width of regular cards.

An incomplete set, but still lovely.

Some postcard fanatics only collect Tuck's.

This is an original envelope in good condition.

Front.

Back.

I was so excited.

There were postcards in the envelope.

Alas, only one remained of the original set.

The one with the cottage scene.

There was this Palace Guard card.

I had to have them when I saw the oilettes of the pets.

From different sets.

Puppies and kittens.

Some cute ones.

And some serious ones.

If you have ever seen You've Got Mail, this would be the store Meg Ryan owned and lost.

Because her customers moved over to the big chain store.

Please if you are lucky enough to have a book store like Ed's Editions, shop there.

We need to preserve places like this.

Visit Ed here at his website to see if he has the book you want.

<You didn't think he wasn't online, did you?>

See y'all!
