Friday Finds

Along with the normal shopping, I have been raiding sections of Horror Monster, my beloved craft stash, for items I have decided I can live without.

Like this primitive high chair which has sat for years in the corner of the den holding stacks of books. 

I had to move it for an electrician to check breakers in the electrical panel. 

I like the corner bare.

So there!

But I did shop last Saturday.

A lovely wicker and wrought iron patio set.

A bit rusty and crusty.





 

A green toolbox - great for a fall or Christmas display.

Look at the cute tiny metal paper cutter.

I resisted keeping it as I only collect the wooden ones.

A wooden crate - lost part of its side.

Two bundles of straw - look like artichokes to me.

I bought these two for the metal baskets but left the arrangements in them to sell.










 

I had to buy a huge box of wooden hangers ...

To get these vintage ones and ...














 

Two old advertising ones.

There was only one tosser in the bunch so it turned out to be a deal.

I fell in love with this primitive green cabinet on casters. 

The guy was unsure why it had not sold.

 

He was sure all the great hardware in the drawers was worth the price.

YES!

I had to take all the junk, but he did cut the price in half.

It has a sliding board at the top for extra work space.

I found this graniteware roaster at Riverfront Antique Mall while cruising the aisles.

It just said Fall to me.

The days are getting shorter around here.

I swim for 90 minutes each afternoon - it's getting darker earlier.



The sun is slowly moving in a different position.

Well, actually the Earth is doing all the moving.

Off to some sales and possibly an auction or two.

Saltwash Versus Sea Salt

After using plain sea salt on my zinc pots (READ POST HERE), I decided to take the challenge to tables.


It would be the Saltwash Versus Sea Salt competition.

Which product would win the gold?

By the way, I was NOT compensated for using the products named in any way.

Saltwash purchased HERE.   Two Lovely Flowers on Etsy.

Cerulean Seas Sea Salt Fine Crystals purchased at Fresh Market for $1.99 plus tax.

My two victims - two similar candlestick tables.

Both needed a bit of tightening and cleaning before the challenge began.

To be able to start on a level playing field, I painted each with Waverly Chalk paint in Truffle.

One coat for each.

Dried great in less than 20 minutes.

In separate plastic cups, I mixed Saltwash with Americana Decor Chalky Finish paint in Escape and the same with plain sea salt.

I only mixed a little because a little goes a long way.

I used the directions from watching Saltwash videos.

At this point I was not a happy camper.

It was a hot and humid day.

Not good for painting outside.

This is the table with Saltwash.

I named her Prissy.

This is the table with plain sea salt.

I named her Scruffy.

I had a very difficult time getting this dry enough for the next step.

The Saltwash must have a drying agent in it - it dried a little better than the sea salt.

I used Americana Decor Chalky Finish paint in Lace for the top coat.

However neither table would dry.

It did not help I left them for a quick Olympics watch and it sprinkled rain on them.

I threw both of them in the dining room for a few days.


The paint finally cured - it no longer peeled right off.

Here's Scruffy after sanding and a coat of satin varnish.

It was quite easy to get the layers of paint to show.

Her base is definitely textured and ancient-looking.

Prissy (Miss Saltwash) was harder to sand.

I was not using the electric sander - just a sanding sponge.

Here's her top - it was difficult to get down to the brown layer of paint.

Her base is textured and has an old look.

So which table wins the gold and which the silver?

I have to award Prissy (Miss Saltwash) the gold - she dried and sanded to a smooth distressed finish.

Scruffy (Miss Sea Salt) wins the silver - if you love a lot of texture and depth this is the choice for you.

I will use the rest of the canister of Saltwash on other furniture projects, but for smalls like my zinc pots, I will stick to plain old sea salt.

I still think the finishes learned in the Farragoz course are superior to these. 

And, NO, I am not compensated to say that.

No Quickies

Miss Peepers is highly perturbed with me.

I did not work on any quickies projects this past week.

So sorry.

I am a total Olympics geek spending hours watching sports - I am now a huge rugby fan.

I did complete my Saltwash versus plain sea salt competition.

Friday Finds

Another year of chickening out on the 127 Longest Yard Sale.

However, I did chance upon a garage sale where the couple had planned to sell at the 127 sale, but their plans fell apart.

I wish I had arrived sooner - trucks piled high were leaving as I drove up.

I envisioned this drop leaf dining table in a soft gray, but it was stored in the back of the truck when I was unloading at the antique mall on Tuesday.

Another dealer offered to help unload and shove it in the booth.

It is mahogany so painting would have been quite the chore.

I had to go back in Chuck's truck to pick it up. 

It was so humid my lens kept clouding up.

Maybe a romantic dining table.

Available in Booth W-10 - cheap!

My project can be your project.

Several years of Victoria magazines.  

A friend and I scanned through for the ones we wanted.

The other bundles are $3 each bundle in Booth C-23.

A quick run through GW netted me a large old bird cage and a metal bookshelf.

When they are cleaned and tagged, they will be at the antique mall.

Did you save up your babysitting money to buy a John Romain handbag?

I did!

Found two vintage ones in great shape.



Along with milk bottles, picnic baskets and the green-legged little table.

More vintage hats - all available in Booth C-23.

The hat in front has a matching clutch and hat pin in a Cullum's box with the receipt!

Cullum's has been gone for decades.

The hat alone was $50 way back when.

For back to school, a child-size paint easel and a large cursive tablet.

A couple of baskets.

A small table needing a lot of work.

A blue Old Yeller.

A pink and green homemade doll.

A set of medical encyclopedias in a magazine box.

Some more thrift shop finds:

Two carved wall hangings.

A candlestick table.

A piano music stand.

So all in all, I did not need to travel four hours to shop.

 


In fact I found so much, we skipped Saturday's auction.

Q Is For Quilt

I seem to be in the right place at the right time to find quilts this summer.

Last Friday I walked up to a garage sale with four quilts piled on a table.

I asked for a price for all four and got a bargain.

An extraordinary bargain.

All four are hand pieced.

All four are hand stitched.

All four use lovely fabrics.

All four do have damage.

All four are backed with a heavy muslin - natural color.

This one has been repaired at some point in its life.

These patches are machine stitched over existing patches.

My favorite of the four.

I quit counting the number of different fabrics used at fifty!

Each fabric is carefully matched with others to form blocks of blue, pink, green, etc.

Please note the folded crease in this one.

Quilts should be rolled - not folded.

If you have to fold, make sure to refold every month to avoid the creases.

Creases cause weak areas in the quilt.

Also, while I am be bossy about quilts, wrap them in white sheets that have NOT been bleached to store.

Not one thing to do with quilts except I bought these bridle hooks at the same sale.

What is wrong with these?








You NEVER hang horseshoes upside down.
