Raven on the Runway

It is time for Project Raven on the Runway featuring Heidi Klum, Michael Kors, and Nina Garcia.  We have a visiting designer Distressed Donna participating in the "Bought At Hobby Lobby" challenge.

All the designers love this one - so many goodies to choose from - such a variety of fabrics!

What!?!  The fabric can only be $1.29 a yard!?!  There are no models - just mannequins!?!

Let's get to the workroom to meet with Tim Gunn who gives us the instructions and admonishes us to make it work!

Distressed Donna goes directly to the tulle section - she knows where the cheap inexpensive fabric is.  She grabs a yard of black and a yard of green.  At the last possible moment she thinks of the fashion wall and those cute ravens perched there.  A vision comes to her.

Distressed Donna wraps and pins and wraps and pins and finally ties (no sewing - she despises her sewing machine).

The black tulle has been suitably ripped to shreds and the raven is perched upon the mannequin's shoulder.

Ready to walk the runway.

Let's listen in as the judges critique this dress.

Heidi:  I would wear this dress if it was a little shorter and a little tighter.  I think it is cute.

Michael:  You have got to be kidding.  There is a raven perched on her shoulder.  And that fabric is not even sewn.  Where is the craftmanship?

Nina:  Who is the woman to wear this dress?  Where is she going?  What is she doing?

Heidi:  I would wear this to a garden party or maybe at home with the kids.  It has that punch of color that I like.

Michael:  The dress is see-through!  Are you nuts?  It is basically a bolt of cheap tulle tied with an awful acid green bow.  And that raven is just silly.

Nina:  I can see this dress being editorial.  I might pick it for a spread in Marie Claire Magazine.  The raven does disturb me.

The contestants file back in to hear the judges decision.

Heidi:  Distressed Donna, I am sorry. You are out.  Auf Weidersein (SIC)!

Gosh, I really need to get back to painting furniture and away from these Fall decor items, but I still have a couple of ravens wanting to be used (or abused!)  Also, as you can tell I watch a lot of Project Runway - A LOT!

See y'all!

  1. Just today...as I was driving back the ten miles or so from purchasing my own half dozen black birds, I envisioned a witch made of stiffened green, black, and purple tulle. Can you stiffen tulle? I know what I want in my head...don't know if I can execute.
This is just precious! You should have been the next Design Star!! Thanks for yet another great 'raven' post! Keep 'em coming!

    1. Hi Nancy -in answer to your question about stiffening tulle - YES, you can buy a fabric stiffener at the craft or fabric store - it's basically a very heavy starch. I've used it to "stiffen" doily snowflakes. Your project sounds really neat.

  3. Thanks for the morning smile - your dress looks awesome, such a cute idea. I'm with Nina - I can see it in Marie Claire as an editorial piece. And darn, I forgot that Project Runway was on Monday nights here in Canada.

  8. Lol, you crack me up every week! I love Michael's comments. Poor Distressed Donna, I don't think you're really out at all. I bet they'll bring you back in two shows to freak out all the other contestants, or at least on the final challenge to make you work for free. Thanks so much for sharing at Etcetorize this week~
