Blue, Primitive, Chalky

The little brown table is now blue, primitive and chalky.

On purpose!

Remember the table once used as a giant puppy chew toy?

A hand sander worked its magic to smooth out the splintered bits.

I left the holes for character.

The table cleaned up great.

The plywood top was furniture grade so it was already smooth enough for chalkboard paint.

Americana Decor Chalky Paint in Serene Blue.

Followed by Americana Decor Ultra Matte varnish.

One coat paint.

Two coats varnish.

Only the legs and the table skirt were painted.

Used black chalkboard paint.

No primer needed - the paint acts as a primer on most surfaces.

One coat vertical.

One coat horizontal.

One coat vertical.

Three coats in all.

Drying in the sun.

Read the directions on the can as to how long to let it dry between coats.

Used the Distress Stain in Brushed Pewter for the edges.

Up close and in person you can tell the difference.

I promise!

I did not wish to drag the table inside to stencil.

BUT I did want to stencil.

BUT it was a very windy day.







Extreme amounts of blue tape required.

When lettering I start with the middle letter and work out to either side.

I have an obsession about the letter and number stencils.

I fill in the gaps.

I also shadow around the edges - used metallic pewter craft paint.

CHALK

Succinct.

Notice I added a highlight to each letter. 

Condition in each direction.

Careful to use the soft side of a piece of chalk.












 

Use a soft cloth to erase the top.

It's blue.

It's primitive.

It's chalky.

Bohemian Bandana Chest

Bohemian Bandana - it's her name and her style.

A hipster kind of girl.

Way back in February I bought this lingerie chest and had big plans for her.

















 

I promptly took her apart.

Sanded.

Cleaned. 

Tightened.

Looked through March for four-inch pulls.

Finally filled in the holes and drilled a center hole.

Bought a jar of Waverly Truffle Chalk Paint.

Loved the rich brown.

Stuck the drawers back into the sanded white base and abandoned her into a dark corner of the living room.

By chance I placed a turquoise basket on top of her.

An AH-HA moment. 

Painted the base a bright turquoise.

Loved the result.

But bare-naked drawers?

No way!

Found an over-sized paisley stencil at Tuesday Morning.

Used a craft paint in turquoise.

Now I can rarely just use a stencil and let it go.

I have to shadow the edges to make the design pop.

Used craft paint in pumpkin for the shadow color.

Found maple knobs in Horror Monster's hardware section.

Used Americana Decor Satin varnish.

I finished late in the day on Saturday.

The sun would not cooperate.

I tried to hide her in the shadow of a gigantic pine tree. 

So please excuse the photos - they are worse than usual.

Definitely a boho chick.

The knobs are perfect.

Miss Peepers approved.

Rolling Blue Tool Chest

What is not to like about a primitive blue rolling tool chest?

It checks all the boxes on my list.

After cleaning out all the metal bits, it needed a heavy scraping and scrubbing.

Of course I used  my A+ scraper tool.

Melissa of Melissa's Antiques guessed correctly my favorite tool is actually a grill cleaner!

The hardest parts were the two small partitioned areas on either side.

Resorted to a toothbrush to clean those. 

Hanging out to dry.

Notice the top is not attached.

The screws had ripped from the frame.

Wood glue, clamps and four new screws fixed the darling right up.

The wood was very dry so Feed'N Wax to the rescue.

Delicious blue patina.















 

The handles are drawer pulls.

But they are sturdy.

The wood really glows.

I refuse to give it a name because I cannot keep it.

Though I do lust after it.

It will be rolling its primitive blue self off to the farm sale at Magnolia Ridge.
