Softly Gleaming

Raise your hand if you love the soft gleam of tin and aluminum kitchenware.  I would have to raise both hands and wave them wildly.

I was cleaning out a shelf (yes, I really was!) and unpacked some of my vintage kitchenware and thought they would look nice displayed out of the kitchen into the rest of the house.

I picture the collection with its silvery glisten for a winter mantel and tablescape.  (No, I have not gotten that far, but I will show you when I do.)

There is a mixture of totally random pieces of both tin and aluminum.  Here are an iron resting plate ( well, that's steel), biscuit cutters, a mayonnaise mixer, and a sprinkler top for a bottle.  Raise your hand if you even know what the use was for that. (I will reveal the answer at the end of the post.)

I see all kinds of projects using funnels, but I just don't have the heart to do anything to these.  Some do have holes for hanging if needed.

I have several of these half-round graters, and there are some of my cookie cutters.  My favorite of this bunch is the horse.

Have they ever been used for cookies?  No, just for crafts.

Two aluminum colanders with ready-made hanging holes.  I have a definite plan for these.

Two salts and one pepper - a useful threesome when crafting.

Love molds - here are large and medium ones.

Are you beginning to see that wintry gleam?

Yes, the four medium molds above are marked JELL-O.

An assortment of many molds:  bells and several different swirly ones.  I might just downsize these.  I honestly had not taken them out of the bag!

BUT the collection of measuring cups and egg poachers are definite keepers.

Now I have started a plan of how I will use these.  If it stays cold for several days and I do not have to drag out my shorts again, the winter decorating will commence.  I know I am weeks behind some of you, but I am slow.  I will get there!

(The sprinkler top attached to a cork was inserted in a soda bottle filled with water.  You would sprinkle the water on your clothes before ironing.)

Meanwhile, it has actually been cold enough to have a fire.  Chucks patiently taught Willie how its done.  As intense as Willie was, I think he could do it.  If only dogs had thumbs!

See y'all!

  2. Oh my gosh! I laugh! Gotta love the intense fire training session. If he asked questions, we'll know he's ready thumbs or not.

Now that you mention it, I do remember my mom having a bottle that she sprinkled water with while ironing. I had totally forgotten that. Nice work. I love a memory revived from the stale recesses of my mind.

And what a stash of tin and aluminum! It's like the Fort Knox of gelatin molds, (think Knox Gelatin/Fort Knox, that is my attempt at a play on words)...(It's a stretch I know.) I cannot get over that cool jello mold and all those funnels. You're like me. I can't fathom altering some old things. I always think if I just had a few more of this or that, then I could go ahead and use some. But I get more and each still seems so valuable. Do you have a number of funnels you'd have to get to in order feel you could make something with them? I'm glad you cleaned things out so we could enjoy the wintery gleam.

And by the way, you are not behind me as far as Winter decorations go. I will likely never decorate for Winter since it's not Wintery here. You can rest knowing that at least you are not in last place.

Hey, to Chucks, for making a cameo!

  3. I was going to say flour sifter until you put us right! I suppose in the old days it was useful when ironing, non of your modern steam irons then! I like the cutters best of all, how great would it be to have a biscuit made from one of those shapes....after picking out the crafts bits of course lol

  4. Always love your collections. Waiting to see what you do with the colanders. I went to Finds Thrift 25¢ Sale this morning and there were lots of the thin flat old pot lids with the ring. So tempted to buy them, but no idea of what to use them for and I am trying to cut down on my collecting. I did buy a colander that sits in the corner of the sink ... will enjoy that to toss my veggie clippings in. I always look forward to your inspirations.

  11. Yes, sprinkled laundry and mom would put hers in the freezer to come along and iron later on.
Love the metals - my grandmother had a mold or to that was copper colored - wouldn't I love to have those these days? (Yes). Nice collection . . . Enjoyed my visit, Thanks, Jenn via Liz's TTT

  12. That is a lovely collection of molds. I picked up a few not long ago. I think they are jello molds, but I suppose I will use it for some pretty designed cakes. Very inspirational collection. http://onecreativeprocrastinatinggal.blogspot.com/ "Inspiration in Progress" blog hop.
