Green Over Blue And Yellow

dresser makeover, American Decor Chalky Finish Paint, serene blue
I am green with envy over this sweet blue and yellow dresser.

I saw through the faux woodgrain from the 1950's.

It is one of those pieces you can use in any room.

However there was a secretive side to the dresser.

Some of its history could be seen by the drawers.

More in a few minutes.

If you have ever created faux woodgrain - old style, then you know it takes multiple layers of paint and a whole lot of patience.

However, if Santa brought you a new hand sander for Christmas, then you can take those layers right off.

The sides were sanded down through a couple of layers.

I almost forgot the before pics - see the blue.

The drawers and the long wooden pulls after sanding.

I left the back unpainted so the new owner could see the dresser was once upon a time an oak dresser.

Inside you can see the original frame of the old oak dresser.

Long side panels were added to make it modern - MCM, that is.

The top drawer had part of the brass lock.

There were double holes under the wooden pull bars where the old drawer pulls had been.

Serene in Americana Decor Chalky Finish Paint.

The dresser sat in the driveway for three hours while I piddled about other projects trying to decide about the top.

I could not paint over the distressed yellow top.

I buffed and applied Ultra Matte Varnish.

The sweet blue and yellow dresser sits waiting for a new home in Booth W-10, Riverfront Antique Mall.

  5. Love the Serene color and have painted a few garden items with it after a post you did about a year ago! Love learning about the past of anything. I like hat you kept the top distressed and back original. Love all your baskets too, do you see many at your both? Do you just tie a bow around the handles...maybe I'll try at my booth!

  7. Super cute Donna and I love that you left the top distressed with the yellow paint and woodgrain showing. I just love that color! Have a great rest of the week!

  8. My mother did a few of those "old school" faux wood grain projects when I was a kid. I love the "archaeological" aspects of this project. Way cool!

  9. The color is gorgeous and I love that you left the top. I think it's great that you share your knowledge of furniture so that people like me (who have no knowledge) know what to look for in vintage furniture pieces. I would have never known that it was faux wood grain. I would have ruined it by slapping some paint over what was already there! So beautiful!
