Friday Finds

Blog Friends, Junkin', vintage books, Ridge Spring
Continuing on with the adventures of Rush, Katie, and Distressed Donna while Riding the Ridge through the small towns of South Carolina.

All three of us are book lovers so at Stuff & Things we spread out and spent some time going through the book section.

Here are a few of the books I found.

And brought home.

A box of small Testaments and prayer books.

Copyrights from 1941 to 1963.

Jungle Tales -  Adventures in India by Howard Anderson Musser - 1922.

The Revised Rumford Complete Cook Book by Lily Haxworth Wallace - 1940.

The red book on the bottom is My Friend Flicka by Mary O'Hara - 1941.

I cannot begin to count how many times I read this book growing up.

Three books from the Famous Horse Stories Collection all written by Rutherford G. Montgomery.

The Capture Of The Golden Stallion - 1951

The Golden Stallion's Revenge - 1953

Golden Stallion To The Rescue - 1954

Strangely not one of us had read this series.  Maybe before our time.

Girl Scout Handbook - 1960.

Presented to Nancy King of Troop #154.

Generation Of Vipers by Philip Wylie - 1942 - War Edition.

"A philosophical discourse suitable only for the strong."

And finally, my favorite.

First, it is red with gilt.

Second, it is small - 4 by 6 inches.

Third, it is about Christmas.

A Budget Of Christmas Tales by Charles Dickens And Others - 1895.

Eighteen tales in all.

Rush, Katie and I came away with a stack of book treasures.

See y'all!

  2. I always love to find old books. I don't believe I've ever read "My Friend Flicka." Horse book?

  3. We have a thrift store in our litty bitty town that gets lots of stuff from golf retirement community folks. I cannot tell you the number of books they throw away. I've tried to get them to donate or ship to others. I guess if I want it done I'll have to do it myself.

  4. More old book love. MMMMMM! Nothing like it. Who published those small prayer books? The cross/crown imprint on the covers is similar to one used by Christian Science on older copies of their books. You read Flicka (1941) several times but the 1950's horse books were before your time? (I think you grew up in a time warp.) I seem to recall seeing Whitman versions of the Golden Stallion books with lovely covers.

  7. I think I was sitting in the book section just for the fan, because I didn't find anything I "needed". I remember seeing the small religious books you got, but I missed the others! I think I was still looking at stuff (while sitting on my portable stool!) as you and Katie checked out. We had a blast!

  8. I love a good book post, Donna--some nice finds. I was a Girl Scout growing up, so I have an affinity for anything Girl Scout-y :)

  9. I love all of these wonderful finds. I do love my e reader but it is sad to think the hardcovers may go the way of the dinosaur.
