Tattered Tags

The over-abundance of rain has kept me indoors so I have been making tattered tags to replenish my supply.

I know I have shared tags with you before, but here is the newest bunch.

Of course, I used images from The Graphics Fairy - slightly altered over at Pic Monkey.

AND there was torn cotton ribbons, stamping, and distressing involved.

Freight tags were soaked in a mixture of old coffee, cheap vanilla and a dash of Rit taupe liquid dye.  I stirred them around with a metal spoon - gently scratching the surface of the tags to make distressed marks.

While scrounging around in my craft stash, Horror Monster, to find some torn ribbons, I discovered this piece of calico and decided it was just too pristine.  In the bowl it went.

No .longer white!  A nice grungy look.

Notice the scars left by the spoon and from folds while in the dye bath.

I did dye the strings, but decided not to use them.

Great tip here.  Go buy two aluminum screens from Habitat.  Lightweight items like tags and cloth can be sandwiched between them for drying.

Unfortunately the brief period of no rain was not long enough for them to dry completely.  It was fairly easy to pick up the screens and bring them in the house to finish drying.

The cloth torn into ribbons and the tags dried.

Besides the floral print, I used a turquoise calico for ribbons.

After deciding on the images I printed them out nine to a page.

Each image had to be trimmed to fit on the tags.

StazOn saddle brown ink and two stamps (a tapestry and a distressed)  were used to make each tag suitably tattered-looking

Mod Podge affixed each image to a tag.

 The finished products!

Arlette, a cowgirl, and a girl with a bouquet.

Ballerinas, two girls, and a dancer.

Roses and a girl with her cat and dog.

Yes, I sneaked a pink tag into the bunch.  I painted with Poodle Pink and then stamped instead of dying this set.

Time to round them up and take them to the shop.

This is the tag I created to hang on the packs.

Always make sure to credit a person who provides you with free images to use in your projects.  When I create with The Graphics Fairy images, I give Karen a mention.

It is only fair after the work she does!

I have three big pieces of furniture in my car that need to be painted.  Surely the rain will go away for a couple of days.  There are also five, yes, five tables in the living room and three chairs in line for make-overs.  I did find some treasures this weekend, but have not unpacked them.

I promise to show them.  As usual.

See y'all!

Before the Rain - Jasmine and Roses

Before the rain of Andrea came and stayed for days, there was the beauty of jasmine and pink roses to greet us each time we turned into the driveway.  The scent of the Confederate Jasmine was truly intoxicating.  It made you swoon just a little.

The climbing rose was overloaded with buds this year and I was looking forward to the show.

I ran out just before the heavy rains descended to take photos.  I knew from past experience the buds would be beat to death.

The pergola was my twentieth wedding anniversary present from my husband.  He patiently worked in the driveway as I designed on the fly what I had envisioned.

Those floor-to-ceiling windows in the den needed some protection from the sun.  Now as the plants have filled the pergola, the shade is a welcomed relief.

Some of the rose escaped to underneath the containers on the driveway.  I did not disturb them before they bloomed.

That is my story of why there is still debris from the winter under there!

After the rain?  Most of the blooms are gone, but the vines have grown feet!

It is pruning time - a favorite task of mine.

Whipping every little thing into shape is a passion.

See y'all!

A Motley Mix - Part 2

Finally the truck is unloaded and all the treasures of the Peachtree 23 Yard Sale event have been sorted.  I also have managed to clean and wax some - that's a record for me!

Two backs from Adirondack chairs - one natural wood and one a deliciously chippy red.  Can't you see them in the garden with bright red flowers?

A lonely carved green leg from a forgotten table. A wooden box of wooden finials.  You know what a finial freak I am.

The lard tin was scored by Olive who graciously let me have it.  You have to be careful when shopping with Olive.  She will score on some great things before you even notice them!  Read The Goods by Olive here!

Most of you figured out from the Sneak Peek I had bought a blue wagon.  Here it is in all its blue Sears All-American glory.

A great old cutlery tray from a buffet.

The garden gate is an old one - a super heavy weight.  I almost did not get it in the back of the truck.  I love the small size of it.

A square table with fancy legs - needs a ton of paint work to make it pretty.  Not this week!  It goes over in the corner for projects to be done at a later date.

A curvy iron plant stand.

A Eastlake wood piece also from a old piece of furniture.  Do you think in the future all these miscellaneous pieces of furniture will reunite?

A green train case.

Last, but not least, a wonderfully stained and shabby linen piece of luggage with initials!

Let us see a close-up of this beauty.  I plan to try something I have seen some of you do and I hope it works.

Intrigued?

Well, you will have to just wait and see.

Look at the depth of the case.

Say it with me now:

LOVE MY LUGGAGE!

I had planned to sand and paint this bookcase today, but the physical terror on my shoulder was horribly painful today and I wimped out.  It has been added to the pile of items awaiting their time to shine.

I did get several things cleaned and tagged and taken over to the booth.

The red candle shutter and the picnic baskets of blue quilt squares are the beginning of the patriotic display I am creating.

I wanted to show how good the wagon looked once it had been washed and waxed with streamers of blue and red hanging from the handle, but it was too dark.  Anyway you get to see the whole display of items ready for the customers to come in and take home a treasure.  It is a truly motley mix, but I love it.

We are expecting some major crowds at Riverfront Antique Mall this weekend.  About a mile down the highway there is an estate sale of several warehouses once owned by Gordon Farmer.  If you watch American Pickers, his extensive collection of everything was featured.

American Pickers' collector's estate sale set for June

I do want to mention another blogger I met along the Peachtree 23.  Mustang Gina and her husband recently bought a old home in Ridge Spring and her blog tells the tales of owning a historic property.  We met at one of the homes participating in the sale.  Go visit her and catch what she bought!  Read Living With Scarlett here.

See y'all!

A Motley Mix Of Finds - Part 1

Can you believe it?  I actually stuck pretty close to my list while shopping at the Peachtree 23 Yard Sale event.  The event was 44 miles long, but to be honest I only made it for about 20 miles.  BUT  I did buy some great items.

It is a motley mix of textiles, yard junk, and smalls.

At one house the lady had a bag of calico scraps in reds and yellows.  She asked if I like fabric remnants and proceeded to bring out several bags of reds, blues, and golds plus two quilts.

She was happy to get rid of them and I was happy to buy them!

The small red book is a directory with maps of the streets of Paris.  I love the red and silver cover and the colorful maps inside.

There was a tote bag tied up with the tag stating it was quilt squares for pillows.  When I arrived home and unpacked them, they were beautiful.  Blue chambray, calico, and homespun in various patterns.  Some gracious soul had cut them into squares.and sewed around the edges.

I love the rough, worn textures.

This was some little girl's treasure box.  It appears to be fifties and filled with handmade doll clothes, two porcelain Kewpie dolls, some tatting, some jewelry parts, and various other keepsakes.  All of it contained in a stationery box.

I plan to try and get all this into a shadow box frame.

Tiny rolling pins for making clay medallions came along, too.

I could have spent hours at this couple's place.  They clean out estates and had tons of ephemera and photographs.

SSSHHH!  My sheep collection is getting larger, but do not tell anyone I am collecting sheep.  The little lamb cake mold in aluminum?  Well, duh, of course it was mine!

I have a soft spot for baby shoes.  These are very worn, but still in the original box with the receipt from 1959  for $7.16.

The box top proclaims the shoe company manufactures "A Scientific Shoe" for "Self Starters".

I had planned to buy lots of baskets as I am low on them, but the ones I saw were either not right or too expensive except for these.  A graduated set of three hold vintage ice cube trays, a child's atlas, a creamer, paper mache' Santa candy holders, two tin cups, and a Ding Dong school bell book by Miss Frances.

You have to be as old as I am to remember Miss Frances ringing the school bell on TV.

Also, I found two picnic baskets.  I love to find the small square ones.  These two were in good shape.

I rolled the quilt squares and tied them with torn calico ribbons from the bags of fabrics I bought.

So primitive and pretty displayed in the picnic baskets.

(I always think pic-a-nic like Yogi!)

Okay, I have unpacked the small stuff from the car and managed to hide properly store and label all of it.  (Really, do you believe that!?!)  Next, the heavy-duty items have to come out and be cleaned.  It's a motley mix - part two.  Stay tuned.

See y'all!

A Sneak Peek at the Peachtree 23

Another Peachtree 23 Yard Sale is over.  Forty-four miles of bargains set up along the sides of the highway and tucked into the small towns along the way.
I am worn-out, dehydrated, and broke - all signs it was a successful trip.

I met up with Olive from Olive Out at the red caboose in Ridge Spring, SC.  READ!

Always a good place to start the buying.

These are just random people in the photos.

I realized after returning home I only took two photos of the sale.  It was too, too mad to shop, avoid traffic, and take pictures.

I should have taken photos of the goats, cows, and chickens in pastures (this is a rural area!) looking at all the crazy people in bumper-to-bumper traffic stop and rifle through someone else's belongings.

I am way too tired to even think of unloading all this junk lovely stuff.

So here are a few tantalizing teases to whet your appetite for the big reveal which may have to be two reveals.

Front seat - lucky I was riding solo!

Backseat - passenger side.

Another small bag might have fit in that space!

Back seat - driver's side.

I am seeing something just too shabby and too perfect!

A view from the rear.

As you can see I obviously practiced some restraint.  There is space for more under and over this load!

I am now squealing with excitement over several things I spy.

Enough for tonight - I have to go torture my frozen shoulder with scar tissue-tearing exercises.  Yes, it is just as much fun as it sounds!  I will be back with probably two posts to show just what treasures are packed in my truck.  Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

See y'all!
