Ch-ch-chilly Deals

Thrift shop, vintage finds, china, linen, books
It is official.

The National Weather Service has researched its archives and the ice storm which came and stayed too, too long was the worst in the history of US ice storms.

Then we had a 4.1 earthquake - most of us thought it was just more trees falling.

Chucks and I have hauled numerous limbs out to the street, but have no major damage.

Froze for several days until the power came back on and still without cable TV, but I only cared about the Olympics so we were lucky.

But I digress.

First I went to Kroger before the storm for the necessities: milk, bread, peanut butter, tuna, and dark chocolate.

Then I went to the thrift shop because I knew it would be days without a thrift shop trip fix.

Did not want to suffer thrift shop withdrawals, you know.

Look above at the pretty green tin tissue box, a red hymnal, a red dictionary, and a beautiful old French china platter.

Here's a close-up - crackles and flowers and gilt edges and raised patterns.

She's a beauty, for sure.

Four Sirocco (probably misspelled the name!) plastic gold and cream plaques.

When we quit hauling limbs to the street and prune the damage to the hedges, I will be listing these in the Etsy shop for you collectors.

Another teaser:  here is the before pic of the candle sconce.

You have seen the middle with it blue.

Soon you will see the end.

When I actually finish the thing.

Note that piece of linen.

I always pick up the red berry stems - good for all seasons.

This lovely vintage fifties or sixties paper mache' coaster and tray set.

Made in Japan.

Soon to be in the Etsy shop.

Note the linen.

I do love this handmade cardboard basket stitched with leather laces.  It has old floral prints decoupaged on it.

A-a-a-are those forceps!?!

Yes, never know when you might have to open someone up.

Note the stripes on the linen.

Well, of course, I bought a wooden box to paint.

.

I opened it to find a whole bunch of multicolored blocks!

The label:

Linen P Crash
Toweling
Made from long fiber imported flax

It has the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval.

A nice heavy-weight linen with stripes along the border.

Was once five yards and now about four.

Keep or sell?

Always the question with me.

Tomorrow it is back to hauling limbs and cleaning debris, but it is supposed to be warm and sunny so I will not mind.

There's a very hot shower waiting when I am through!

See y'all!

  1. Great finds Donna. The linen would make a pretty table runner if you decide to keep it. I love the platter and the wood box. I am kicking my butt for passing up an awesome wood wine box at the flea Saturday! Oh well...:) Enjoy your treasures.....and the sunshine!!!

    Blessings, Vicky

  2. Donna ... your "Thrift Store fix" likely helped you weather that terrible ice storm. Glad you are seeing some sun. Great finds ... I know you will do something interesting with those blocks. The cardboard box is so unusual and love the linen fabric. Thanks for sharing.

  4. Dearest Miss Donna; I am so glad that you and Chucks are alright, and are both doing well. I hope that you folks were not too cold, however!!
You always manage to find the most Beautiful things when you go to the Thrift shop.
I personally can not wait to see what you will make with all of those blocks!!!!! (I have all kinds of ideas running through my head just looking at them!!)
I think that Linen piece which you found was sold way back when Ladies wished to have matching dish towels for the Kitchen......And made them sized to fit....I have seen and purchased some when I was in Europe, as I use them constantly when Baking.
However, you could do so much with this piece! Make Pillows, Holiday items, a Runner....any number of things!!! Take Care, you two!!! XO

  9. Emergency thrifting! I love it! I'm intrigued by the Sirocco. I've never heard of it. You have some wonderful finds. I think you should keep the linen..it makes a good backdrop for pics. Now get out there and finish picking up those sticks and watch out for widowmakers!

  10. Donna, you are a FUNNY girl! I laughed out loud several times - first when you decided to go thrifting - it was as important as groceries!!!! (and yes...dark chocolate.) Next - the forceps thing! They would be nice salad tongs, if you don't think about where they've been!
You are a treasure, girl. Thanks for sharing your finds at RL Thrifty Life Thursday - I always enjoy seeing your treasures so much!

  13. My neighbors are 80 and have never seen an ice storm like this one. I confess I did pop out to the flea market on Sunday and then resumed our clean up. Love the plate.
