Cooped And Crated

distressed painting, patina, crate, nesting box, primitives
Same project day as my last post - sorta obsessed with a specially mixed turquoise.

One of my favorite tools is this wire brush/scraper with the offset handle.

This primitive crate had a monster oil stain with some wood damage.

Scraped and brushed until most had gone.

Washed with ammonia water and dish detergent with degreaser.

Look at the saw marks.

The other piece was a nesting box from a chicken coop.

Scraped and washed.

Now the paint.

First I mixed a turquoise craft paint with powdered blue tempera paint and water.

The left-over stain showed and the color was too bright.

Though I did love the way the saw marks were highlighted.

 First coat.

I went back to the mad painter's lab to throw in some black acrylic paint with more blue tempera and water.

See the difference?

Much older looking.

The bottoms of the nesting box came out to clean.

Went with the same dark turquoise for it.

No, I did not mix enough, but I knew how much to mix each time I ran out.

Before waxing.

After waxing with Howard's Dark Oak Citrus Shield.

After a vigorous (or is it rigorous?) buffing.

I pick up old shoe shine brushes at estate sales for this job.

Luscious!

They both look quite ancient!

To be truthful, the crate is ancient.

Low luster on both pieces.

Gleaming in the late afternoon sun.

Both of these pieces will be available at The Gathering at Magnolia Ridge.

See y'all!

Crates And Ladders

peach crates, orchard ladders
Beautiful spring day - time to drag out some of the big items from the peach farm estate sale. (READ ABOUT THE SALE HERE!)

The peach crates and the orchard ladders were scrubbed down and left in the sun to dry.

Taking a sun bath.

Relaxing before waxing.

All the dirt came off the ladders without much effort.

The crates had to be scoured with a wire brush.

Chucks volunteered to help by applying the Howard's Feed 'N Wax.

Howard's feeds the dry wood and brings back the color.

Used MinWax clear on the orchard ladders.

Protects the remaining paint and adds luster.

Ready to be loaded!

Crates and ladders can be found at Booth W-10, Riverfront Mall Antique Mall, North Augusta, SC.

Crates - $50

Ladders - $125

Miss Peepers loves project day.

She tends to stick close to home since her unexpected eleven-day vacation to parts unknown.

Don't forget The Gathering at Magnolia Ridge.

Quickies - Fluff And Four Years

lavender bundles, music rolls, fluff, blog birthday
Good Sunday morning!

More fluff for this Quickies post.

I have scoured through your blogs to find how you set up for shows.

One thing stood out.

FLUFF!

Small inexpensive items that seemed to make your big items stand out.

Previously I painted pine cones to match some of my primitives.

This past week I went a bit crazy with fluff.

BUT I am not distressed about it at all!

Purchased lavender stems at half price at Hobby Lobby.

I save my real lavender stems for ME!

Hate to be a hog, but ...

I do love lavender.

Gathered some white tissue, lace bits, and twine.

Twelve bundles.

Nearer to the Gathering, I will drop some lavender oil on each bundle.

My cherub head wished to be in numerous pics.

I do tend to spoil him.

I bought a notebook of sheet music from a teacher's estate.

I have used copies of it for several project pieces and now it is time to turn it loose.

There was enough for eight stacks.

Dug out a roll of overdyed torn cotton ribbon from Horror Monster's Stash.

Gently rolled each stack into thirds and tied a ribbon on each.

Group photo.

Today is my blog's fourth anniversary.

It is so hard to believe I have been doing this for four straight years.

Some of the bloggers who started around the same time as I are still hanging on.

Others have taken different paths.

I cherish my time in Bloglandia interacting with bloggers who quickly become friends.

I love to find new bloggers starting out.

Y'all will just have to put up with me some more because I plan to stick around for awhile.

Thank you for being my friends!

Fluff will be available at Magnolia Ridge.

See y'all!

Friday Finds

thrift shop, vintage finds, books, toys, primitves
I was asked today by a fellow thrift shop junkie how I stayed so youthful.

I told him if you haul junk older than yourself, you always look young!

So what did I buy this week?

I rescued the folding metal chair from the scrap heap.  I think I can wire it back together enough to hold a plant.

A wire freezer basket.

Two wicker baskets.

Two badminton rackets in a double racket press.

Roller skates.

I had a pair like this until we all removed the wheels from our skates to make skateboards from odd pieces of wood.

The skateboards cost us nothing except the skin from our knees and elbows.

A homemade candlestick table.

The giant potato masher is actually a dry wall mud mixer.

A stack of bank bags - both small for coins and large for bills.

A couple of wooden boxes.

More baskets.

An orange Japanese tin.

A See's Candies tin

Three small metal planters.

Finally - a pizza peel.

Two nice drawers.

A small creamer.

An English tea tin.

A box of old textbooks.

An official Pepsi jeans jacket.

Two round floral prints from the 1950's.

Close up of the drawer fronts.

A pair of metal pantry doors with delightful avocado and gold decals.

I have a definite idea for these.

Just as soon as I can get the packing tape off without marring the painted finish.

A tool caddy.

A nesting box for a chicken coop. (Thanks, Olive Out on Instagram and Joe on Instagram!)

A primitive crate

A concrete Mary who fits perfectly in the primitive crate.

Two pointed shutters/gates made from fence sections.

(Thanks, Arlene!)

It seems I had a two by two theme this week.

I have managed to get half my finds sanded, cleaned and painted.

An April Fool?  Not me!

Some of these pieces will be at Magnolia Ridge.

See y'all!
