Nighty-Night Stand

I have been in a fever of painting while we have low humidity and sun.

 Remember the night stand I bought on the Low Country Crawl?

 It turned out a winner!








Sad, dark brown thing - huddling in the corner of the thrift shop.

 Being passed by.









Even the nice curvy details failed to attract any buyer.













I told the clerk I wanted it, and he showed me this feature.

 It has a hidden compartment!

 I said it would be a great place to hide your jewelry.

 The clerk said it would be a great place to hide your gun.

 Either way it was rather neat.







As you can tell from the pic above there is some gray gunk on the top which is probably the reason the night stand had been passed by.

 I had to super sand the top.

 The gray gunk was fragrant and at first I thought maybe an overturned candle was the culprit.

 However it was not wax.

 Someone suggested diffuser oil.

 Any clues?

Well, it all came off.

 Eventually.

 I do not get paid to say what I use.

 A beautiful blue-gray you have seen me use countless times.











After one coat.

















After a light sanding with a fine grit sanding sponge and a buffing with a cheap, rough paper towel.

 That's all it needed for this shine.












Notice the before and after on the top.

 Really there is NO wax or varnish on it.

 Just buffing.


Note:  I used two coats of Americana Decor Ultra Matte Varnish for protection after buffing.







The original pull was broken so the knobs and a spare pull from Horror Monster, my beloved craft stash, were painted in Rust-Oleum black metallic.

 Look at that secret grin.



You know he is hiding something.

 He was front and center at my booth at Riverfront Antique Mall for a day before being put on lay-away.

    Hmmmmm....fragrant grey gunk.... I have no idea.
    It really has lovely curves and design. I don't have a gun so maybe I could hide my pea shooter in the secret compartment.

    That's a beautiful color and finish, Donna. I would have hidden my stash of chocolate bars in that secret compartment. Take the jewels, leave the chocolate!

    You do good work, Donna! Looks like anything painted with chalk paint is a winner. Guest folks are tired of the same old wood tones. I remember spilling perfume on my dresser and it "ate" the finish. It didn't look like that but maybe it was some sort of old fragrant something or another. I know this sounds foolish, doesn't it?

    I do believe that you have outdone yourself this time!!!
    What a Stunning piece...I would Love to have such a piece complete with a hidden compartment......I could use that for sure!!!
    I am clueless about the grey gunk....I am so glad that you were able to remove it and to make this piece shine.
    This piece is a real showstopper. I would have bought it quickly, too!!!

    I wonder if that gray gunk is some kind of incense residue? Love the hidden compartment! And the grin. Although I do get nervous when the furniture starts smiling at me.

    Wow, it turned out just beautiful Donna! Love the color you chose. I have no idea what the stuff on the top could be but I bet it made you feel a little better about it after you realized it smelled nice... would have been totally gross if it smelled nasty! lol!

    The blue gray you chose is very soothing for a night stand, I think. I'm surprised that anyone would suggest to hide a gun in such a beautiful piece... I don't think the night stand would appreciate it!
