Last Friday I walked up to a garage sale with four quilts piled on a table.
I asked for a price for all four and got a bargain.
An extraordinary bargain.
All four are hand pieced.
All four are hand stitched.
All four use lovely fabrics.
All four do have damage.
All four are backed with a heavy muslin - natural color.
This one has been repaired at some point in its life.
These patches are machine stitched over existing patches.
My favorite of the four.
I quit counting the number of different fabrics used at fifty!
Each fabric is carefully matched with others to form blocks of blue, pink, green, etc.
Please note the folded crease in this one.
Quilts should be rolled - not folded.
If you have to fold, make sure to refold every month to avoid the creases.
Creases cause weak areas in the quilt.
Also, while I am be bossy about quilts, wrap them in white sheets that have NOT been bleached to store.
Not one thing to do with quilts except I bought these bridle hooks at the same sale.
What is wrong with these?
You NEVER hang horseshoes upside down.
Your luck will run out.
See y'all!

Pretty quilts Donna! I can see why you picked your favorite with it's gorgeous fabrics. Jane
ReplyDeleteLovely quilts! I was quite happy to find horseshoes while on my 127 junkin journey. I picked up 10. I'll probably regret not buying more later! :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilts Donna.

Love your old quilts ... good advice on storing/displaying them ... made me want to just get up ... go unfold and roll mine. Will get to that later. I sent that advice to my daughter who has started collecting new quilts.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip about folding quilts. I've got some quilt rolling to do.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful old quilts- reminds me of my Mamaw. :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, beautiful quilts! Your favorite is mine also. Love those colors!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tips on the quilts! I am storing them all wrong! You seem to always be at the right place at the right time for great stuff!!
ReplyDeleteI love the quilts. The one with all the different fabrics is my favorite also. What a gorgeous thing!! My Mom use to quilt and taught me about storing quilts! Good info!

Wow Donna! Those quilts are true treasures indeed. I have always loved the look and feel of an old quilt and yours have beautiful fabrics and patterns. It always astounds me the amount of work they take especially when you think of all of those tiny quilting stitches - not to mention piecing the tops! Beautiful treasures Donna - you lucky girl!! Hope all is well!

Love the old quilts. Who could pass those up?
ReplyDeleteYou got a great deal. I knew about refolding quilts but I didn't realize I should have rolled my quilts.
ReplyDeleteI don't think your luck is ever going to run out! Beautiful old quilts are quite a treasure.
ReplyDeleteI not only love old quilts, but create quilts...actually, I am somewhat addicted, though I machine quilt them....rarely hand stitch any more. Love the ones you found.

I love quilts, hand-stitched or machine-stitched. You found some lovely ones. I have seen picture and watercolor quilts at shows and they are magnificent and very expensive!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous, gorgeous quilts. Your favorite is my favorite, but I would of been happy to have any of them..three years back I was at a garage sale that ended up being an estate sale and there were 5 quilts, I picked up one and asked how much they, the lady said $2...so I quickly turned around and picked all of them up. Sweetest treasures I've ever found...
ReplyDeletePS...I never knew you are suppose to roll your quilts vs folding? Why would lines creases become permanent?
ReplyDeletethanks for the tips about not folding. I have two handed down family quilts and will be rolling them from now on.
ReplyDeleteoh lucky you
ReplyDeleteThank you for leaving such a touching comment on Cole's poem... I miss him desperately. I really like your blog... I must return to read lots more. Thank you, lovely quilts and you know I like quilts, lol.

Boy, I sure do love those vintage quilts! I have bought two at estate sales, but had to pay $75 for each. I make quilts and know the time and money that go in to them. So I realize that's not a bad price, but to find a bargain like that is amazing! Thanks for sharing them with SYC. I roll and fold my quilts. Guess I should go roll all of them that are being stored in my linen closet upstairs. :)

What awesome quilts. I'm sure they'll sell fast for you. I have a couple that were made by my grandmother and great grandmother. They are my treasures. Keith uses one his aunt dade, when Chiquito will let him have it. I have one that my grandmother made for me when I was in high school. She used scraps of fabrics from all the bathrobes, pjs, etc she made for me when I was younger. It's my total favorite, but it has a lot of repair needs and I have not the least clue how to go about finding someone to do it.
ReplyDeleteHi Donna, just hopping back to let you know that you will be featured at SYC this week.

Jann
The quilts are all lovely and I had no idea about rolling them being better, but it makes so much sense, thanks!
ReplyDeleteI quilt so I know what a sweet treasure you found! :)
