Things I love would include linen tablecloths, lace, and long loose scarves. ( I was always entranced by the story of how Isadora Duncan, the dancer, died - neck broken by her long, flowing scarf as she sped through the French countryside in a convertible.) I am distressed and aged and I like my clothing and accessories to reflect this. Chucks assures me daily that my outfits are just that -distressed and aged.
So how does a tablecloth come into this picture? As an upcycle project, of course!
I do not have a before photo so use your imagination. Square beige linen tablecloth with a hand-crocheted edge around it. The middle was brown with stains and holes and tears and you have the picture.
I actually needed some very aged linen so I cut the middle out of the tablecloth to use and left the crocheted edge.
One day when dying cloth, I used the lace to soak up the extra dye in the bowl.
It was flung outside to dry.
Now I had a big ball of taupe-colored lace blanket-stitched to a scrap of linen. I examined the piece to see if I could salvage the edging, but there was no beginning or end and cutting it would unravel all the work.
What to do, what to do?
I threw it over the bathroom towel rack and the light came on. Wait, no, that was the reflection in the chrome rack.
An idea hit me. Hit me hard.
An infinity scarf for this old tatty piece of taupe lace!
And it worked.
And I wore it - twice so far.
Chucks wanted to know what was around my neck.
I told him it was a tablecloth I had rescued.
I told him I was emulating Isadora Duncan.
He told me that there were actual stores which sold new clothes. (He thinks my outfits are a bit bizarre. Well, actually. they are.)
Anyway, I think Isadora would approve.
I did get one, "Like that scarf."
And two, "How did you make that?"
And the lace scarf dyed taupe goes great with my blue denim work shirt!
See y'all!

Poor Chuck. He and my husband would probably have a good discussion about our funny ways! I love this as an infinity scarf. I have a scarf that I bought new that is actually kind of similar looking, except that it is black. Don't you love when we have those bursts of creative brilliance? Blessings to you, Patti
ReplyDeleteLove it, you are brilliant, and we are kindred spirits. Husbands nine times out of nine times have no clue anyway. I never ask Joe if my butt looks big for instance.

I think you did a wonderful job on that! It looks so cute! I'm off to the store momentarily to purchase some Rit dye and I'm going to give a go to this cute idea with a long length of border lace I just got....I tried it on last night for my husband and he laughed at me. We'll see!! He might not recognize it again after I finish with it!

Wow, your clever ideas just keep taking off into new realms of fabulous! What will you be wearing next season? Will it be the pillow cases?, Chucks might ask. If so, The rest of us can't wait to see how you pull it off. I know it will be amazing.
